We engaged C J Spurr Builders to build our house in 2008.  We chose Chris Spurr on the basis of his detailed cost estimate and his obvious thought given to building a house in a very constrained site.

The experience was virtually stress free.  Chris undertook the project management as well as the actual construction.  The quality of the workmanship was outstanding, as can be seen in the photos.  It was a challenging site, but each step of the exercise was obviously well planned, and there were no dramas!

Chris’ cost estimate was accurate, the final cost being greater than the original estimate, but only because we added things.

An important factor was Chris’ empathy with what we were trying to achieve, his good advice and easy going manner ensured an enjoyable experience.

We have subsequently recommended C J Spurr Builders to other friends, one of whom engaged Chris and was very happy with the outcome.

Baddeleys Beach

We have employed C J Spurr Builders to carry out three alterations on our home in Algies Bay.  Chris was initially unknown to us but was recommended by a plumber/drainlayer we know.

In October 2011, Chris and his team excavated under our house and extended a basement, adding a new bathroom and storage room.  This was a complex project, not helped by the difficult access and wet weather during the excavation.  John is a geotechnical engineer and was of course keeping a very watchful eye on all that was done! We were thrilled with the result.  Chris organised the project magnificently and the large number of sub-contractors were co-ordinated so that there was very little ‘down time’.  Because it was impossible to know exactly what was going to be involved until excavation began, we worked on a materials and time basis which worked well.  We felt that Chris was scrupulously honest and was always working in our best interests, choosing the most cost effective options for us.  He provided very detailed invoices.

The guys he had working with him were pleasant to have around.  They were friendly, considerate and polite.  Because we work from home, and have a dog and cat, this was important to us.

In January 2012 we got Chris to add a large deck and steps.  Again because of our difficult access and sloping section with established garden it was a challenge.  And again, we are thrilled with the job they did.  This time Chris was involved in preparation of the initial plans required by Council as well.  We were expecting family with you children from overseas and Chris worked beyond normal working hours in order to meet the deadline we imposed.

In September 2013 our third project was rebuilding a wall of our boatshed which had been slowly showing signs of collapse.  Again, it was not a completely straightforward job as the existing structure of the rest of the boatshed was retained.  The sub-contractors were well co-ordinated and managed by Chris, and again it was a very successful contract and we were very pleased with the job in all respects.

We are pleased to recommend C J Spurr Builders as honest, reliable and hardworking builders, and if we ever have another need for builders they will be the firm we’ll employ.  We would be happy to be contacted if required.

My husband and I are fortunate enough to live in a house build by C J Spurr Builders.  

We count ourselves incredibly lucky that Chris Spurr agreed to take on our job and we would like to emphasise how much we enjoyed working with Chris and his builders on this project.

This house was undoubtedly a very challenging project as nothing was standard in the construction and often details took a lot of figuring out.  Each separate building is at an angle to the next joined by glazed linkways.  All this needed to be watertight and precise.  It is a credit to Chris and his team of wonderful builders that it all came together without a hitch.  Chris was very receptive to our needs as clients and personally, as the architect for the house, I could not have wished for a better builder.  Chris never charged ahead with anything without consulting us first.  I suspect we may have been his most fussy clients, an architect and a furniture maker, but he met the challenge always with a smile and quiet determination.

I cannot recommend Chris highly enough and if you are lucky enough to have him agree to build you a home, I would not hesitate.  His integrity, knowledge and work ethic are incredible.

We cannot speak highly enough about our experience working with Chris Spurr, who built our home in Sandspit in 2013. Chris was recommended by a friend, who had done a significant project in the district with him. After our first introduction, we looked no further. We liked that he operates with a small team and undertakes to concentrate on one project at a time, so you feel you have his full commitment throughout the build. 

His attention to detail and his determination to produce a quality product that will stand the test of time is impressive, as is his integrity. He was always reliable and at no stage did we feel he was taking short cuts or delivering less than his best. These are qualities that are widely recognised. Almost every tradesman or sub-contractor who came on site would remark on how much they respected Chris’s work. You also quickly discover that when you build with Chris, you join a fan club of other owners who have had similar experiences.

Our first build with Chris was so enjoyable – on budget and on time – that we would have no hesitation about doing it all again.  

Sandspit

When we purchased our house in 2015, we decided to make some improvements and engaged Chris Spurr to undertake them. We were lucky in the respect that Chris was the original builder only 18 months prior to us purchasing the property. We also used the original architect, so it was a real bonus.

We found Chris fantastic to work with and the job flowed seamlessly through to completion some seven months from start to finish. We lived on site while the alterations were undertaken and Chris was always mindful of this fact and also our privacy.

Chris’ workmanship is second to none and the finished product is of the highest standard and quality.
